TOURISM COMPANY REOPENS TO THE PUBLIC THE PASEO LA PRINCESA IN OLD SAN JUAN

San Juan, PR June 8, 2018 – The appointed executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (CTPR), Carla Campos, announced that the area of Paseo La Princesa has reopened to the public again with limited capacity. The area surrounding the sea, of the aforementioned promenade in Old San Juan, was restricted to the public due to the poor conditions it was left in as a result of the impact of the huge waves that were recorded on the Island in early March. According to the phased reopening plan announced by the director in March, the Tourism Company completed the cleaning and safety adjustments phases to be able to open it to the public. Capital improvement works will be carried out soon after completing the architectural and structural analysis currently underway.

“Paseo La Princesa in Old San Juan has great historical value that both the residents of the Island and our visitors enjoy. For this reason, we worked quickly with the task force created to carry out the cleaning and damage assessment tasks, and today we are pleased to announce that the promenade is now open to the public,” said the appointed executive director of the CTPR, Carla Campos.

“The National Park Service of the United States in Puerto Rico (NPS) is honored to be an ally with the Government of Puerto Rico and the Tourism Company. With all the emergencies, recovery efforts, and general operations we face, we are much more effective when we support each other for advice and assistance,” said Randy Lavasseur, general superintendent of the Caribbean National Park Service.

On another note, it is worth mentioning that a distinguished group of experts in the fields of architecture, structural and civil engineering, culture, and history are currently working hard on the study and design of the restoration of the iconic site. “The work of this team and the diligent efforts of Governor Ricardo Rosselló's administration will result in a renewed, resilient, and strong Paseo La Princesa. While the structural improvement works are concluded, we decided to open to the public so that the iconic space can be available for the enjoyment of our people,” concluded the Appointed Secretary of Tourism.
